A competition for the design for a pedestrian bridge over the Turku central railway station’s rail yard ended in the summer of 2016, and our proposal got the second place. It was an invitation-only competition, with six top-rated teams selected. In the team there was also the leading Finnish bridge design company WSP, architect Jussi Tervaoja, energy and lighting designer Janne Käpylehto, and internationally recognized designer Stefan Lindfors.
One notable thing about the proposal was the idea of digging a tunnel through Puolalanmäki, which would connect the railway station and the Logomo business and cultural center with the city core and marketplace. The proposal received praise for its bold and unique appearance, described as “an independent and self-standing work of art”, as well as its functionality and comprehensive consideration of various users.
